Forest School
At Sabden Primary School, we are proud to be able to offer our pupils the opportunity to learn outdoors in our dedicated Forest School area.
We believe that Forest School is an inspirational approach to learning that takes place in a natural setting. Through regular outdoor sessions, pupils develop resilience, creativity, teamwork skills, and emotional well-being. Our woodland space acts as an extension of the classroom, offering endless opportunities for exploration and discovery. These sessions are led by a qualified Forest School Practitioner.
Autumn Term
During the Autumn Term at Forest School, our Year 5 & 6 pupils have been learning to identify a variety of trees in our local environment. We have explored the differences between deciduous trees, which lose their leaves in Autumn, and evergreen trees which stay green all year round.
Using our new knowledge, we investigated which types of greenery would be the most suitable for creating our seasonal decorations. We discovered that evergreen branches are the best choice as they stay fresh, hold their shape and bring a lovely woodland scent to our festive crafts!
Spring Term
During the Spring Term, the children enjoyed an exciting range of hands-on learning experiences in our Forest School area.
One of their highlights for Years 3 & 4, was designing and creating their own footstools using natural and reclaimed materials found within the Forest School environment. The children developed practical skills as they planned, measured, assembled, and evaluated their creations. They demonstrated excellent teamwork, problem-solving, and creativity throughout the project, taking great pride in their finished footstools.
Our KS1 children also explored the fascinating world of habitats. They investigated the different habitats found within our Forest School area and learnt about the animals that live there. Through observation, discussion, and outdoor exploration, they discovered how habitats provide food, shelter, and protection for wildlife. The children identified a variety of creatures and considered how they are adapted to survive in their environments.
The term provided many opportunities for outdoor learning, helping the children to develop a deeper understanding of nature while building confidence, resilience, and practical skills.
Summer Term
This Summer Term, the children have been busy caring for and improving our Forest School area. They worked hard to tidy the grounds and planted a variety of bulbs, flowers, and root vegetables, helping to create a colourful and thriving outdoor space for everyone to enjoy.
The children also took great care in tidying the pond area, learning about the importance of maintaining habitats for the wildlife that lives there. As a special finishing touch, they left a little gift for the fairies, adding a touch of magic to our Forest School and sparking their imaginations.
Through these activities, the children developed their gardening skills, learnt about caring for the environment and enjoyed working together outdoors.
